The Regal
Royal Island Maldives

Resort

The Royal Island Maldives Resort and Spa is rated as 4 stars.

It's a past winner of the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Award for “Best Hidden Gem in Asia.”

Ideal For…

Royal Island is a resort for everyone...

From Couples and families to honeymooners and anniversary celebrants. In other words it’s a popular destination for all!

Royal Island Maldives Overview

Royal Island Resort Maldives is on the island of Horubadhoo in the Baa Atoll. So that’s northwest of Malé International Airport and reached by seaplane in about 30 minutes. Upon arrival it’s a few minutes in a boat from the seaplane landing pontoon to a good old welcoming terra firma.

If you choose to travel from Malé to Royal Island Maldives by speedboat it’s a journey of about two and a half hours… and you should consider this when you book your holiday as you’ll already have spent a number of hours travelling... Having said that, it’s a chance to get some shut-eye before arriving at the island!

Royal Island Maldives 01 Royal Island resort Maldives is less than a kilometre long and about 200 meters wide. The beach size around the island fluctuates and is topped up by pumping sand from the seabed.

This is common practice in the battle against erosion on many Maldive islands. The northwest beach is but a tiny strand, whereas farther round the island it widens out and the trees create long shifting shadows across the broad sands.

Royal Island Maldives Accommodation

There are two types of accommodation available on the Royal Island Maldives Resort and Spa. Both are designed with elegance, a richness of furnishings and stylish carved wood interiors.

148 Beach Villas are situated along both lengths of the island, discretely dotted among the palm trees and lush green foliage. We think about ten of them are arranged with interconnecting rooms so ideal for those travellers with children. And we know that the villas on the south side of Royal Island Maldives are the first to get booked up, as the sun stays there longest.

Two presidential suites sit at the sunset and sunrise tips of the island. These two suites are spacious with large decks and beach access.

All of Royal Island Maldives villas and suites come with air-conditioning and the obligatory ceiling fan (Charley and I are still trying to figure how effective this is but it looks the part!) IDD telephone satellite TV with in-house movies, a mini-bar and room safe for locking up the mini-bar contents (joke!) a spacious bathroom with tub, bidet and large open air shower (delicious!) and of course terrace and seating for those languid evenings watching the stars.

Vacation Package Options on the Royal Island Maldives

Choose from the usual suspects… bed and breakfast, half-board, full-board or all-inclusive.

Always look at the options closely, for example some visitors find it cheaper to go half-board and pick up snacks at the bar.

Your specialist Maldives travel agent will have more information and help with the sums for your Royal Island Maldives vacation.

Facilities on the Royal Island Maldives

The Maakanaa Restaurant is where most of the meals are taken on Royal Island Maldives. An open air bistro style restaurant, the Maakanaa is casual and relaxed with a good selection at mealtimes.

The À La Carte restaurant, Raabondhi is found waterside nestling among the sandy island outcrops and overhanging palms. Offering Mediterranean style cuisine, fresh seafood (from tuna to lobster) and numerous delicacies from eleven in the morning to eleven at night. You can’t wander in here wearing your bikini, so dress smart casual!

The Palm Terrace on Royal Island Maldives is found towards the centre of the resort. This poolside bar with snack menu is a great venue for chilling out.

Each day afternoon tea is served at the Palm Terrace. All the tea you could want from Earl Grey to peppermint and a variety of sandwiches, pastries and light snacks.

The Boli Bar is a warm and inviting bar open 24 hours with… believe it or not, 3 pool tables.

The lounge is plush and there’s lots of wood and rich fabric to settle into.

The Fun Pub does exactly what it says! Open from 17:30 to 01:00 hrs you can watch the live band, dance to the disco or karaoke to your heart’s content. Tired legs and voices invigorated with classic cocktails can dip in the pool…

The Pool Bar is built into the freeform swimming pool and offers great ocean views. The decking has room enough to laze about and the bar offers snacks, light meals and chilled juices. Open all day from eight in the morning to late in the evening.

Activities at the Royal Island Maldives

The gym is a full on centre well equipped with all you need for an aerobic and weight busting workout. The tennis, badminton and squash courts are of professional standard and playing partners can also be arranged. These can be booked before you arrive. The tennis courts are floodlit.

The wet room facilities include a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam baths. These can also be reserved in advance.

The Royal Island Maldives offers many excursions and activities on and off the island. Why not book and try from the following selection…

Dawn fishing… throw a line and in the gentle swell of the sea wait for your catch to a backdrop of rising orange breaking the indigo of the fast disappearing night. There’s night fishing too and for the adventurous big game fishing.

Royal Island Maldives 03 Enjoy the Maldives classic we know and love as the sunset cruise. A cocktail on a dhoni to the setting sun is a perfect end to your day! Or perhaps it’s just the beginning?... Hmmm

There are snorkelling trips daily organised by the resort and the dive centre.

Island hopping is a great way of seeing the local people and also to have the chance to stay overnight with a midnight picnic on the deserted island of Gemendhoo.

Water sports are popular on Royal Island Maldives and you can choose from a vast range to keep you and your children (if they’re with you) entertained and fit! You’ve got dingy sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and snorkelling, catamaran sailing, jet skiing and water skiing. For the fun of it you can enjoy the banana ride, the giddy speeds of the fun tube and lessons in water skiing, wake boarding and knee boarding.

The Delphis diving centre is excellent and they provide training and courses for all standards including children. PADI diving courses from beginners to instructor level are on offer.

Night time dives are available and the centre keeps all the dive trips it manages to a minimum of about five divers per trip. Contact the centre and book in your orientation dive on your arrival. Then take a trip out to the reefs and see the underwater life that so many travel here to experience.

Specialities on the Royal Island Maldives

How about a beach dinner barbeque for two at your villa? A table set with a white tablecloth, flowers, candles and Champagne. The Chef and staff prepare your meal at the table as you sit bathed in the moonlight with candles flickering in the gentle breeze and the sand still warm from the day’s sun.

Royal Island Resort Maldives 04 The Spa Centre is a delight and comes highly recommended. Virtually a resort within a resort you enter a beautiful Indonesian designed Spa of thatch and bamboo. Lush leafy plants and fountains give an atmosphere of relaxed tranquillity.

The body treatments available are superb and well worth investigating. From the traditional full body massage and couples' massages to the Sirodhara herbal oil treatment and the more familiar head, neck and shoulder massage.

Hmm… Anything else catch your eye?

Royal Island Maldives' house reef is mainly rebuilt so the best snorkelling and diving is organised at drop offs beyond the lagoon.

For the seaplane enthusiasts among you there’s the Trans Maldivian Airways twin-otter plane to look forward to. There’s none of the usual hanging about on the jetty with other travellers. You will be escorted to the Royal Island lounge where in some comfort you’ll wait to be called for the flight.

All honeymooners will receive a bottle of Champagne and a fruit basket. You’ll need to request this at the time of booking to be eligible.

If you happen to celebrate your birthday whilst on the resort then a birthday cake and bottle of wine finds its way to your table along with a number of mischievous waiters singing “Happy Birthday” to you.

… And if that’s not all, your anniversary is celebrated too! A bottle of Champagne and a fruit basket on Silver and Golden wedding jubilees. Again you’ll need to state this clearly at the point of booking you vacation package, honeymoon or otherwise!

Enjoy your Royal Island Maldives holiday!
