Resort and Spa
The Shangri-la Maldive islands attractions are numerous. This Resort and Spa lies about 460 kilometres south of Male Airport and four kilometres from Gan International airport on Addu. That’s a 70 minute flight from Male and a ten minute speedboat ride from Addu atoll.
Ideal for….Honeymooners, families and couples on their Maldives holidays. So that’s just about everyone!
Overview of Shangri-La Resort and Spa Maldive IslandsThe island is shaped like a elongated tooth, about two kilometers long and 150 meters wide. It lies over the Equator so expect something ceremonial on your flight to Gan!The most interesting element of this island is that it’s linked by causeways to four Maldive islands. Pick up a bike and meander across the Indian ocean.
As always with luxury holidays in the maldives there is an abundance of choice when it comes to the villa selection with 142 to choose from.

Remember to check all the villa details with your chosen holiday company.
There are 5 types of villa,
The Pool Villa
15 pool villas laid out and brushing the paths and walls with tropical vegetation. The Maldive islands pool villa’s have their own private pool, terrace and open-air shower. You have ocean views too and when the strain is too much just fall in a heap on your daybed strategically set out on the patio to lull you to sleep to the sound of the sea.Charley prefers the luxurious oval bathtub and the fact there are his and hers vanity counters.
The Beach Villa
Like the pool villa only on a beach… I know, it’s hard to follow so try and keep up! 29 of these beauties to choose from, each with two adjoining pavilions, one for sleeping and the other for chillaxing in. What more could you ask for? You wander in through your own thatched gate entrance to a landscaped courtyard. Bit like Italian renaissance meets the Spanish Moors with a bit of the East thrown in. You have all the facilities of the pool villas of course.
At last! Some stilts! A warm worn timber walkway leads out over the lagoon to your villa on the Whispering Palms area off the West side of the island. These villas are lovely with open spaces to make the most of the scenery and open sided terraces allowing you to dangle your legs over the side. You can of course slip into the sea and snorkel from your villa. There are 60 water villas to choose from.
Tree house villa
There are 16 of these on the island. Charley and I didn’t stay in one of these but I can only imagine it must be wonderful! The Tree House Villas are perched on stilts amongst coconut palm and other flowering foliage. All the amenities of the other villas with the added bonus of fantastic views! OK, only 3 meters above the ground but you do get a elevated infinity pool!
Twin Beach Villa
There are only ten of these villas. Laid out adjacent to one another they are designed for privacy and with families in mind. Having said that if you’re travelling with friends they are perfect as these villas offer proximity and also privacy. You have a infinity pool large patio and a sundeck to wander about on.
Muthee means ‘pearl’ in the Dhivehi language. There’s only one of these villas and rightly so… from the private Spa pavilion to the infinity pool you will have your own piece of the island to rule over. Think Jack Sparrow meets Paul Gaugin… then again perhaps not… Just think of yourselves!
Again as with the Villa Muthee this villa is a one off spectacular. You really do have your own complex with courtyard, 24 hour in-villa dining, lots of patios for al-fresco meals and entertaining. With extensive gardens to wander through margarita in hand… sigh… wonderful! And something Charley loves… verandah’s to sit under and watch time march off into the sunset.

You have the run of five restaurants and bars on the island….
The Javvu Restaurant & Bar, serving everything from prime ribeye steak to classic Mediterranean cuisine. For those seeking a certain stillness to their mealtimes then be aware that there is relaxing ambient music during the day and something a bit more stirring in the evenings. Have to say Charley and I are always surprised at how we find the music neatly fits with the whole ambience.
The curiously named Dr Ali's Restaurant & Bar, This is more your local food styles, themed across three rooms covering the Indian ocean, up to the China sea and the Arabian gulf. Really very very good indeed.
The Fashala Lounge, your trusty Maldives cuisine for breakfast and throughout the day. Cocktails in the evening to finish off your day.
The Manzaru Bar, just me and Charley… relaxing and enjoying the lagoon changing colour as the evening folds in like folded satin. Mmmm just perfect!
The Endheri Pool Bar, you could call this the beating heart of the resort. A idyllic spot to just hang out and enjoy what the island has to offer.
The Villingili island Spa is called CHI
... and as with all the popular Maldive islands there are some great therapies on offer. Traditional remedies and beauty treatments abound and yes it’s for you men too! Phil never fails to have a facial and body treatment to clean out the pores. The Spa villas overlook the sea and we can recommend the intuitive massage on offer.

It has to be experienced. So get your snorkel gear out, buddy up with someone and float out over the finest underwater garden in the world!
There’s plenty for the diving enthusiasts with more than 25 dive sites and the 140-metre wreck of the “British Loyalty” resting 33-metres down, hull up for some great diving. It’s just a half-hour boat ride away from the Island.
There’s an Adventure Zone for the children under 12 (as if they need it with al the swimming they’ll be doing!) with monkey bars, swings and all manner of equipment.
Specialities on Shangri-La Resort and Spa Maldive IslandsThe Shangri-La Ecological Centre is a place to learn about the conservation works around Villingili island. You have nature trails to take you around the islands natural beauty.
Anything else to keep your eye on?The wine we have to say is quite magnificently and outrageously overpriced. Having said that you are south of the Equator in the middle of nowhere…
The staff on the island provide a Kid’s pack for them. Toys, nappies and all the other essentials are provided. Please remember to coat your young ones in lots of factor if they need it. Phil has a delicate English complexion and he finds factor 30 for most of the holiday browns him up nicely! You have lots of shade provided at the central pool area if you need to get the kids off the beach.
Don’t forget that if you fly to Male you still have an internal flight of about an hour or so to get to the island. Some visitors think landing at Male is job done!
Shangri-La's Villingili Resort and Spa is a real gem. This is one of the finest Maldive islands and we urge to experience it!
