The Cocoa Island Maldives Resort is ideal for families, couples and honeymooners. The accommodation is spacious enough for families, private enough for couples and offering enough “romanticism” for honeymooners. OK I’m not keen on that word but the Shambhala retreat Spa is a real experience for the honeymooner in you.
Cocoa Island (Maldivian name; Makunufushi) is on the South Malé atoll. It’s just a 30-minute speedboat transfer from Malé International Airport and as guests don’t need seaplanes to access the island this also means there are day and night time transfers to the island. Cocoa Island Maldives is about 350 meters long with a sand bar at one end that vanishes into the ocean (much like the Kuramathi islands sand spit by the blue lagoon). What gives this island character is the fact that all of the rooms are Dhoni boats converted to villas. The decks ensure privacy and a beautiful setting for al fresco dining. You have access over a jetty then up your gangplank and you’re onboard! Cocoa Island Maldives has five types of rooms and the only thing you can’t do is fish from them! They represent a standard of style that some would call sumptuous. Nine Dhoni Loft Suites have a mezzanine level beneath long rafters featuring a bedroom, ensuite bathroom and private deck. Ten Dhoni Loft Villas built in November 2005. These are at the sunrise end of the island so you imagine what the views are like from there! The villas are spacious and feature a bedroom, large bathroom with dressing room, a sitting room and balcony with steps descending into the water. There is also an outdoor shower. Two 2-bedroom Villas (space enough for families). Both villas have four decks overhanging the lagoon and a kitchen as well as plenty of lounging space. They are also exclusive as there's a personalised butler service available to assist guests on a bespoke basis for the duration of their holiday. All accommodation on Cocoa Island Maldives come with private sun deck with lounges and dining table, bathtub and separate shower stall, air conditioning, minibar with snacks and tea and coffee making facilities. Complimentary bottled water and fresh fruit daily, satellite TV and CD player with DVDs, international direct dial telephone with modem port, hairdryerprivate safe, resort bag and finally… flip flops (now that’s handy!). Ufaa Cocoa Island Maldives' main restaurant offers a blend of Maldivian Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine emphasising seafood, tandoor cooking and organic, locally-sourced produce. Menus change daily according to availability. The Kerala influence of Southern India is noticeable in the cooking and use of light fragrant spices. Faru the island bar called is open from 10AM until midnight serving a range of excellent wines, cocktails and energising organic juices. There's also a full room service menu available. There’s a boutique shop selling all the usual trinkets as well as a pretty extensive range of necessities; so if you run out of anything, chances are they’ll have it in stock within reason. Try out the main swimming pool on Cocoa Island. Maldives activities have a habit of encouraging even the most reticent to try out some water sports. So all I have to say to you landlubbers is… have a go at kayaking around the island! You can with some assistance fish from your kayak and have Chef prepare your catch. There’s a fully equipped Dive Centre too, a gym with yoga facilities for the flexible (or inflexible for that matter!) and a COMO Shambhala retreat, that’s the Spa facility to you and me, offering a full range of treatments including massages, Ayurveda, facials, a hydrotherapy pool, steam rooms and meditation area. Between January and April the ocean currents tend to be strong and this promotes excellent visibility. Most dives are at the channel entrance or drop offs where all the big fish can be seen. Staying on the surface you have a choice of windsurfing or catamaran sailing. For a break from the physical have an Island Hop. Visit other islands and find yourselves landed on deserted beaches. This holistic approach is found in all the services offered from massage to yoga. You can even have a blissful week long retreat on the island emphasising the traditions of Indian physical and mental relaxation. The retreat also offers complementing organic meals depending on your needs during your stay. Honeymooners receive a half bottle of Champagne on arrival and a basket of fresh fruit daily but there is a charge so check out what it is before booking it. The online travel resource Conde Nast Traveller (November 2007) voted Cocoa Island The Ultimate Island Beach in the Maldives and one of the 30 Best Island Beaches Worldwide. Again it’s all about personal choice. Phil and I for example find any beach in the Maldives as fitting into a top 100 place to be. So don’t fluster yourselves that Cocoa Island only made the top 100 and not the number one spot. It is stunning and you must go, that’s all we have to say! Don’t forget that during any tropical storms the reception for the satellite television may be dramatically reduced. Just the way it is back home when the clouds gather!
